Three Yoga Poses to Improve Liver Function

The liver is one of your body’s most critical organs in the human body, yet it is also one of the most commonly abused organs. Many of us consume far too much alcohol, drink too much sugar, overeat junk food, and put too many toxins into our bodies, meaning that our livers are having to work around the clock to remove as much of this junk from our systems as possible. The liver, along with the kidneys, functions as a filtration device for your body, meaning that if your liver suffers, so too will you. Thankfully there are things we can do to enhance liver function, including Yoga. Here’s a look at three yoga poses proven to improve liver function.

Boat Pose

The Boat Pose, or the Paripurna Navasana pose, is fantastic for stimulating the liver, as well as your other abdominal organs. To perform this pose:

  • Begin in a sitting position with your hands on your lap
  • Next, bring both legs out in front of you so that they’re in roughly a 30-degree angle
  • Slowly bring both hands up off your lap and bring them in front of you as well
  • Squeeze your leg muscles, hold the contraction, bring back your shoulders and hold for a ten count
  • Slowly return to the starting sitting position and repeat for as many reps as required.

Downward Facing Dog

The Downward Facing Dog pose, also known as the Adho Mukha Svanasana pose, is one of the most commonly recognized yoga poses in the world. This pose boosts immunity, it alleviates fatigue, it stimulates circulation, and it rejuvenates the liver. To perform this pose:

  • Begin on a yoga mat in a kneeling position
  • Next, take a deep breath out and lift both of your knees off of the ground
  • Slowly bring your tailbone down to the floor until you begin to feel it stretch and pull tight as it lengthens
  • Next, try to press your tailbone towards your groin and bring your glutes up, pointing them at the ceiling
  • Push both thighs back, bring back your shoulder blades, and keep your gaze in a neutral position
  • Hold the pose for a moment or two then return to the starting position
  • Repeat for as many reps as required

The Cow Pose

The Cow Pose, also known as the Bitilasana Yoga pose, is excellent for massaging the liver, boosting circulation, enhancing core strength, and impr

oving spine mobility. To perform the Cow Pose:

  • On a yoga mat, get d
own on your hands and knees so that you are in a table-top position
  • Next, ensuring that your head is entirely central, take a deep breath in and drop your stomach down to the floor
  • You should now bring your sitting bones up into the air so that they are pointing at the ceiling
  • Next, you should move your head so that you are looking straight in front of you
  • Hold the pose for a few moments before returning to the initial starting position, but remember to move slowly
  • Repeat for as many reps as required
