Potatoes are Good for Diabetes


Potatoes are something which is available to us for a very long time. We cook them differently and eat them. We also add them to other food, and it is the main dish in most of our life. But since we know that potatoes contain more amount of carbohydrate we need to avoid eating them. This fact is true but potatoes also fat, sodium and cholesterol free, so consuming them does not increase your cholesterol level.

Glycemic Index:

Glycemic Index is the rate at which carbohydrates in the food gets converted to glucose when you consume them. High glycemic food is not advised to be consumed by people with diabetics, and for individuals who are trying to lose weight, as the excess glucose can get stored as fat content in the body and cause weight gain and obesity.

Glycemic Index is said to be higher in potatoes, but this is not applicable to all the potatoes that are available. Some potatoes like Russet Burbank potato have a very high glycemic index while other potatoes like the Nicola potatoes have a minimal glycemic index.

So when people with diabetes consume potatoes, they need to make sure that they consume potatoes which have a lower glycemic index so that the conversion level of carbohydrates to glucose is less. Also consuming potatoes can give you a staple diet as it is fat, sodium, and cholesterol free.


Diabetes is a disease when the blood level in your body increases and your body is unable to produce enough insulin to lower the blood sugar level in your body. Diabetes caused due to increased intake of sugary food and carbohydrates. Increased amount of carbohydrates in your body makes your body to convert it into glucose and store the extra glucose as fat in your body.

Diabetes can also be a hereditary disease; then there are chances that you are also likely to get diabetes. So if you feel that you will likely get diabetes because of your family tree, then you can start taking precautions at an early stage.

White Potato:

White potato is a fat-free, high vitamin C, potassium and B6 containing fiber diet food. White potatoes when boiled and cooled at room temperature form starch. The starch gets fed by good bacteria which produces butyrate which is the prime source of energy for the colonic cells. White potatoes contain about 110 calories and that too it does not have any fat content in them.

Sweet Potato:

We often feel that consuming sweet potatoes are bad for diabetes since the sweet potato tastes sugary. But sweet potato has a shallow glycemic level. The rate at which carbohydrates in sweet potato gets converted to glucose in the body is meager. So, when you consume sweet potato, your glucose level in the blood does not increase drastically. The way we cook potatoes can change the calorie and the glycemic levels of our body
